Congressman Mark DeSaulnier

Representing the 11th District of California

Congressional App Challenge

The Congressional App Challenge

I am pleased to announce that our office will be taking part in the 2016 Congressional App Challenge.

Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. This competition allows students to compete with peers in their own district by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app”, for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. By encouraging and recognizing our nation’s young programming talent, Congress hopes to shine a light on the growing importance of these skills.

The apps will be judged by a panel of local judges who work within the academic, software, and entrepreneurial fields. The app of the winning student or team in each participating congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website, and displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit.

The following are a summary of the Congressional App Challenge Rules:

  • Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four.
  • Students entering the competition must submit a short video demonstration explaining their app and a completed questionnaire online by 12:00pm EST on November 2, 2016.
  • More information about the rules and submission process is available here.

Submissions will be judged on the following criteria: quality of the idea, including creativity and originality; implementation of the idea, including user experience and design; and demonstrated excellence of coding and programming skills.

The challenge runs from August 25, 2016 to November 2, 2016 and is open to all high school students who live or attend school in California’s 11th Congressional District. To participate, and for additional information, please click here.

I hope that you will participate in this exciting event. Should you have any questions or concerns, please call my District Office at 925-933-2660.
