Transportation & Infrastructure

We need to rebuild America – beginning with our entire transportation infrastructure. Experts tell us we need to invest $1 trillion to rebuild our crumbling transportation system  – and in the process create some 13 million new good paying middle class jobs in construction, and throughout our economy.

As Minnesota’s only member of the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, I continue to work on a bipartisan basis to advance a comprehensive, long-term transportation plan with new sources of funding to rebuild our highways, roads, bridges, airports, harbors, railroads, mass transit systems and pipelines. Our ability to grow our 21st Century economy and successfully compete in the global marketplace depends on the progress we make in achieving these goals.

The bill that passed unanimously in the House Thursday night was inspired by incidents business leaders in the Brainerd lakes area recently experienced when they wanted to build a hangar at the airport capable of housing private jets, and were willing to put up $1 million to fund it, Nolan said—but the project hit a snag.

The U.S. House of Representatives today passed U.S. Rep Rick Nolan’s bill, H.R. 6014, with unanimous support to reduce unnecessary cost burdens on State and Local governments and their airports from the Federal Government when conducting airport improvement and expansion projects. Currently, State and Local governments are being forced to pay an inordinate amount of money to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to complete a project that could be done at a lower cost by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).

We brought Washington to Minnesota again when U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx visited Duluth on July 21. And wow, was he ever impressed with our people and with what he called our “city with a plan” for creating good jobs by gearing our infrastructure to advance mining, agriculture, forestry and tourism well into the 21st century (“Foxx praises local plans: US transportation secretary visits Duluth, roundtable,” July 22).
