20 young women from across the Tenth District were selected from a competitive pool of applicants to participate in the second session of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy this winter, and this week our second class of participants graduated.

I visited MakerSpace at Lake Forest High School to tour their new lab designed to inspire high school students to build prototypes and work collaboratively using cutting edge technology. We discussed what we can do to break down barriers for women looking to break into science, technology, engineering and math.

I'm sharing Alex's story because too many families have experienced loss due to a drug overdose. This type of abuse spans every demographic, financial situation and community. It can literally happen to anyone.

This week we held a community forum in Mundelein on efforts to combat domestic violence, sexual assault and sex trafficking. Experts in the community discussed life-saving techniques, domestic violence survivors shared their personal stories of hardship and triumph and service agencies helped schedule confidential appointments.
