The House of Representatives and the Senate passed H.R. 5883, the Technical and Clarifying Amendments to the Packers and Stockyards (P&S) Act of 2016 and was signed into law by President Obama on October 7th. Rep. DesJarlais was one of the original co-sponsors of the Packers and Stockyards Modernization Act.
Last week, Rep. DesJarlais visited Fayetteville High School’s STEM program. Students from each Project Way course presented their curriculum and what they have learned. DesJarlais also toured the school’s band room and was treated to a couple of solo performances by FHS students.
Rep. DesJarlais has been awarded the 2016 American Energy Champion. This award goes to the members of Congress who have demonstrated a commitment to pro-growth policies that will lead to more affordable energy for American families.
The collapse of the Affordable Care Act gets only marginal airtime in 2016, but could define 2018 midterms. Rep. DesJarlais has long sensed the danger of the oncoming battle with Obamacare and stated that republicans would certainly consider working with Clinton to fix our current healthcare system. Rep. DesJarlais co-sponsored H.R. 5883 which focuses on online and video livestock auctions, and clarified that P&S requirements apply to these sales. This bill makes it clear that farmers and ranchers selling through online and video auctions are provided similar protections to those selling at fixed facility markets.
Rep. DesJarlais and Rep. Fleischmann agree that the budget process needs fixing. Rep. DesJarlais made the following statement, “I feel that at some point, and it should have been six years ago, that Congress needs to stay there until we get a budget done. We can’t continue to go into debt. We can’t continue to operate without a budget."
Tennessee Valley Authority is planning to ban floating homes from reservoirs and other public waterways. Rep. DesJarlais urged TVA to find a compromise allowing the existing homes to remain as long as they meet certain standards designed to protect the waterways.
Rep. DesJarlais and Rep. Jim Cooper were credited for voting nay on the President’s veto override 9/11 bill.
As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Rep. DesJarlais co-sponsored H.R. 5883 Packers and Stockyards Act of 2016.
