Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy released the following statement after the House passed, H.R. 5, the Student Success Act:
Today, House Republicans passed the Student Success Act, a long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which made significant reforms to our education system through restoring state and local control while strengthening programs for schools and targeted populations. The Student Success Act returns responsibility for student achievement to states, eliminates ineffective federal programs, supports effective teachers and maintains high standards. Passage of this important piece of legislation stops President Obama from coercing states to adopt his preferred education reforms and “Common Core” State Standards, allows states and school districts to set their own funding levels for elementary and secondary education, repeals the one-size-fits-all Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and supports local efforts to develop their own evaluation systems.
