Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ozone standard rule:

“With each new rule, it seems like nothing will stop the EPA from its attempts to destroy jobs, drag down our economy, and impose its centralized standards despite opposition around the country. The latest rule released today—the EPA’s ozone standard—would cost Americans trillions of dollars in estimated compliance costs alone and will reduce the GDP by even more.

“This rule would harm Americans across the country, especially in the Central Valley of California. Despite all the hard work done to meet previous and current EPA regulations, the Central Valley and other regions throughout the country are struggling because of the unworkable mandates from the EPA. This new rule will not only be impossible for communities like the Central Valley to reach, it will also punish those communities for not reaching them with fines.

“And all of this pain comes with few, if any, environmental or health benefits. Before imposing additional standards, the EPA should allow communities across the country time to meet the existing standards.

“The House of Representatives has been and will continue to work on this issue. We will hold additional hearings in the coming weeks on this damaging rule and, if necessary, pursue legislative action.”
