BROWNLEY ANNOUNCES VETERANS HOMELESSNESS GRANT

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) announced that the VA has awarded the Salvation Army more than $1.7 million to help homeless veterans in Ventura, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara counties.

”We have a moral obligation to end veterans homelessness and I’m pleased to be able to announce this grant that will be used to address this critical need,” said Congresswoman Brownley.

This grant is part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, which awarded $300 million in grants to private non-profit organizations to help approximately 115,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families across the country.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a stated goal of ending veterans’ homelessness by 2015. To help VA achieve this goal, Brownley introduced the “Helping Homeless Veterans Act” to reauthorize SSVF and other vital programs that assist homeless veterans.   

• The Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program;
• The Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program;
• The Acquired Property Sales for Homeless Veterans program;
• The Therapeutic Transitional Housing component to the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program;
• The Incarcerated Veterans Transition program;
• The Homeless Veterans Reintegration program; and
• The Grant and Per Diem Program for Homeless Veterans with Special Needs program.

The provisions of Brownley’s bill became law last year through Public Law 113-37 and P.L. 113-59.
