In an awards ceremony on May 11, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney announced the winners of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition for the 18th Congressional District of New York. The overall winner of this year’s competition is Shona Neary, a student at James I. O'Neill High School, who submitted a black and white photo titled: Tranquility.

With over 12,000 New York and Hudson Valley veterans waiting on disability claims with the average wait time 471 days, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney has launched an online page devoted to assisting the tens of thousands of veterans in the Hudson Valley. Rep. Maloney currently has a caseworker on staff to help veterans with their claims for educational, disability, retirement, medical, burial, spousal and dependents' benefits as well as the correction of military records and medals.

While preserving deficit reducing spending cuts, this legislation gives the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) the flexibility to prevent furloughs and avert the closure of small airport towers around the country.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney introduced the Disabled Veterans Red Tape Reduction Act, HR 1521, to help address the Veterans Administration (VA)’s backlog of disability claims. This bill allows veterans to have their medical examinations done by physicians outside the VA system to help process veterans’ disability claims faster. Currently, 20% of claims are processed through physicians outside the VA system, but the program is set to expire this year. Without timely action from Congress, the VA system would be even more overburdened.

Last week, Maloney introduced legislation to give communities the support they need to ensure dams have the highest safety standards. With thousands of dams across the country posing a serious risk to communities and families, The Dam Safety Act of 2013 addresses the growing safety concerns caused by our nation’s aging dam infrastructure by reauthorizing the National Dam Safety Program (NDSP) which failed to be reauthorized last Congress.

Maloney held a roundtable with the company’s leaders and a tour of the high tech manufacturing facility. Last week, Maloney held a “Congress at Your Company” event at NY Life in Westchester County and plans to continue “Congress at Your Company” events with employers large and small in the region throughout the year.
