Jordan
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (Al-Urdun in the local form) is found in the Middle East bordering Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Jordan is linked to the Mediterranean Sea via the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea and Suez Canal. With a population of 8 million people, 97.2% is Muslim, predominantly Sunni and 2.2% is Christian, predominantly Greek Orthodox. The country is governed from Amaan. The government of Jordan is Constitutional Monarchy with a bicameral National Assembly made up of the lower Chamber of Deputies and the upper Assembly of Senators.
A member of the OSCE Mediterranean Partners, Jordan’s connection with the OSCE dates back to the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, which recognized the close relationship between European and Mediterranean security. Jordon was welcomed into the Mediterranean Partners in 1998 and has become an active participant in the OSCE – Mediterranean Partners workshops and projects on such topics as preventing terrorism, fighting radicalization and border security and six Jordanians have attended OSCE Border Management Staff College. In 2015, Jordan hosted the 2015 OSCE Mediterranean Conference, which focused on common security, including workshops on combating extremism, the role of interfaith dialogue, and migration.
