FERNALD, Bert Manfred, a Senator from Maine; born in West Poland, Androscoggin County, Maine, April 3,
1858; attended the public schools, Hebron Academy, and a business and preparatory school in
Boston; taught school; elected supervisor of schools in 1878; engaged in the canning, dairy, and
telephone businesses; member, State house of representatives 1896-1898; member, State senate
1898-1902; Governor of Maine 1909-1911; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate on
September 11, 1916, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edwin C. Burleigh; reelected in 1918
and 1924 and served from September 12, 1916, until his death in West Poland, Maine, August 23,
1926; chairman, Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds (Sixty-sixth through Sixty-ninth
Congresses); interment in Highland Cemetery.
