Murphy Announces KC-135 Weapons System Trainer to Pittsburgh

Washington D.C. (April 30, 2015) – The 171st Air Refueling Wing (171 ARW) at the Pittsburgh International Airport will receive the KC-135 Weapons System Trainer (WST) flight simulator in March 2016 as a result of Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA)’s efforts and leadership in uniting the Pennsylvania House delegation to advocate for its arrival earlier this year. Today’s confirmation of the Air Mobility Command’s selection for the 171 ARW marks the first time the KC-135 WST will be stationed in Pittsburgh.

In January, Rep. Murphy and 17 other members of Congress in the Pennsylvania delegation wrote to Gen. Darren W. McDew of the Air Mobility Command urging the U.S. Air Force to choose the 171st Air Refueling Wing (171 ARW), arguing Pittsburgh was the ideal location. Locating a KC-135 WST in Pittsburgh was estimated to save more than $3 million versus competing locations.

“Today’s great news serves as yet another testament to the exceptional service in defense of our country, and value provided to the taxpayers, by Southwestern Pennsylvania’s military members,” said Congressman Tim Murphy. “I am thankful to the entire Pennsylvania delegation who helped make this happen. Next March Pittsburgh will be a hub for all Northeast regional Air National Guard members, helping guardsman maximize their flight skills. The units will include 348 crew members each year from Kentucky, Maine and New Jersey. The simulator will not only train crew members for routine, challenging and emergency flight conditions, but will also be capable of simulating combat.”

In his seventh term representing Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district encompassing suburban Pittsburgh including parts of Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland and Greene Counties, Rep. Tim Murphy also serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserve Medical Service Corps at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda as a psychologist treating Wounded Warriors with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
