(WASHINGTON, DC) – Reps. Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Madeleine Bordallo (D-GU) introduced a bipartisan congressional resolution declaring “May as Mental Health Month.” H. Res. 712 seeks to “remove the stigma associated with mental illness and place emphasis on scientific findings regarding mental health recovery.” This resolution is aimed at raising awareness about mental health and encourages Americans to participate in Mental Health Month events.

Since 1949, May has been observed as National Mental Health Awareness Month to draw attention to the mental health issues impacting nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population. Those with mental illness can and do lead fulfilling lives but only one in three receive the necessary treatment.

“Each day, I hear from countless families from across the country who are experiencing a mental health crisis and are counting on our efforts to bring positive changes to the mental health system. By designating May as Mental Health Month, we bring stories of courage and recovery out of the shadows and into the light. We cannot let these families down, during Mental Health Month, we strive to inspire thoughtful examination and discussion across the country on the challenges and opportunities facing our nations mental health,” said Congressman Murphy.

"I join my colleagues in commemorating May as Mental Health Awareness Month. With approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population living with a mental health disorder, we must work to remove the stigma that is often associated with mental illnesses," said Congresswoman Bordallo. "Many Americans with mental health disorders live fulfilling and productive lives, and they should not be defined by these challenges. I hope that all Americans will take time during this month to learn more about mental health disorders and the ways they can help to support those in our communities who have them."
