Washington, D.C – Appearing on CBS News' 60 Minutes, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan discussed his support for Congressman Tim Murphy’s (R-PA) landmark crisis mental health reform legislation, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, H.R. 2646, in an unaired clip yesterday. The bill passed out of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health two weeks ago in a historic, bipartisan vote.

“The other issue we need to take a look at, and I’m pushing this in the Commerce committee, is Congressman Murphy’s legislation on mental health,” said Ryan. “I think we need to improve our mental health laws so we can address these problems before they get out of control because mental health is a component of these shootings that I think we have not looked at seriously enough. So I think that’s an area that we’re going to be taking a deep look at. We’re moving legislation right now in the House Commerce committee.”
The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act boasts 162 cosponsors, and endorsements from almost every national mental health and law enforcement organization, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Treatment Advocacy Center, Federal Law Enforcement Association of America and more. The legislation also has earned several editorial board endorsements since its introduction in June, from the Seattle Times in Washington to the Dallas Morning News in Texas and Washington Post earlier this month.
