Washington, D.C. (August 18, 2015)— Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) lauded the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that it has awarded a $200,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant to the City of Baltimore’s Sustainability Office to help revitalize properties.

“This grant will help Baltimore turn vacant lots into green spaces to enhance the quality of life for people all over the City,” said Congressman Cummings. “I thank the EPA for supporting Baltimore’s efforts to transform vacant lots from liabilities to assets, and I commend Mayor Rawlings-Blake for her leadership in this years-long initiative.”

The grant will allow the city to study 7 vacant and potentially contaminated lots in order to prepare them for redevelopment, including the creation of green spaces for City residents.

Since the creation of the Brownfields Assessment Program 20 years ago, Baltimore has received $1.6 million in grants, which has been used to study 65 properties; two of those properties became the Shops at Canton Crossing and Clipper Mill.
