Nolan Introduces Resolution to Support a Universal School Meal & Nutrition Program

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan this week introduced H.RES 913, legislation to declare the commitment of Congress to our nation’s students through support of a federal, publically-funded Universal School Meal & Nutrition Program that benefits all students and generations to come.

With one in 5 children in Minnesota struggling with hunger, Nolan’s resolution supports a federal and publically-funded Universal School Meal & Nutrition Program and recognizes the strides existing programs – such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision – have made towards reducing childhood hunger and improving educational outcomes. The resolution was introduced with 7 cosponsors.

“As a nation, we have the obligation to provide each child with the tools and resources they need to learn and succeed,” Nolan said. “As part of that promise to our nation’s youth, it is our responsibility to expand – not reduce – programs that have had success in improving educational outcomes and furthering our fight against childhood hunger.”

Recent consideration of Childhood Nutrition Reauthorization legislation made significant attempts to cut the Community Eligibility Provision, a program which made meals available to more than 8.5 million students nationwide, and heap more administrative burdens on to schools under a misguided attempt at cost savings. Nolan’s resolution affirms that future reforms to Child Nutrition Reauthorization legislation must reflect our nation’s commitment to the success of future generations and the end of childhood hunger.
