Nolan Votes to Prevent Government Shutdown, Decries “Governing by Crisis Management”

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan today voted for legislation to keep the Federal government funded through December 9, 2016 while decrying Congress’s “governing by crisis management” culture of repeated short-term stopgap funding bills.

Nolan supported the inclusion of several of his top priorities in the Continuing Resolution, including an increase in funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs and support for opioid grant programs.

“With barely more than 24 hours to spare, Congress finally passed a Continuing Resolution to keep the government funded through early December,” Nolan said. “But when we continue to govern by crisis management, it’s really only a matter of time before we are again on the brink of yet another government shutdown.”

Nolan pointed to his efforts to get the Congress back to work on the people’s business:

“It’s time for Congress to start living in the real world, where you do your job or you don’t get paid. That’s why I’ve introduced the ‘No Government, No Pay Act.’ The simple truth is if we are willing to put the American people through another costly and unnecessary shutdown, then Members of Congress ought to have the decency and integrity to forego our own pay during a government shutdown.”

Nolan donated his salary to charities in Minnesota’s Eighth District during the Federal government shutdown in 2013.
