CLOQUET, Minn. - Many Americans are concerned about social security and Medicare programs, but Minnesota Rep. Rick Nolan tried to put those worries at ease Wednesday.

He presented what he says are the facts about the financial outlook and policy ideas for the future of the programs at a roundtable discussion in Cloquet. Nolan says social security is not running out of money, with a $2.8 trillion dollar surplus.

"It's been a good program. It's lifted more people out of poverty than anything the country's ever done. And the same way with Medicare. It's help to extend people's lives more than anything that's ever been done in this country," Nolan said.

The discussion, hosted by the Minnesota Citizens Federation, was one of three in the Northland this week.
