Almost a year after the Civil War ended, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman was received to great acclaim in the House Chamber. In welcoming Sherman, Speaker Schuyler Colfax was quoted in the article that accompanied the lower print on this page, saying Sherman was “so well-known to you and all the whole of the civilized world as one of our most gallant and heroic defenders . . .” that he needed no introduction. The image shows the Chamber and galleries packed full, with nearly all on their feet, attesting to the excitement of this reception.
