A campaign button with two candidates, such as this one, is called a jugate pin. The term derives from the Latin word jugatus, meaning “yoked together in pairs.” These Montana Republicans were on different trajectories when they issued this joint button in 1912. Charles Pray was running for a fourth House term. Henry Smith, a state Supreme Court justice, was making his first foray in national politics as a candidate for the Senate. Both men lost in a national sweep by the Democratic Party.
