Hudson Introduces Bill to Increase Job Opportunities for Military Spouses
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after introducing the Realizing Opportunities for Spouses in Employment (ROSIE) Act (H.R. 6395):
“Our service members, veterans and military families make incredible sacrifices to protect and serve our country. Too often, military spouses are the unsung heroes. They already face overwhelming challenges, such as taking care of all the family responsibilities alone while their spouse is deployed. But they also face a unique challenge finding a good job—regardless of education, talent and experience—because they move so frequently. Our military spouses should be given every opportunity to find and keep good-paying jobs, and today’s common sense legislation is one solution to do just that.
“I’ve met many military spouses while traveling across North Carolina, and I respect them as some of the most talented workers with unmatched can-do attitudes, resourcefulness, and loyalty. These men and women get the job done, and the ROSIE Act will break down barriers for them to not only find jobs, but build careers.”
After touring R. Riveter, a small business in North Carolina founded by two military spouses, Rep. Hudson got to work on the ROSIE Act to encourage employers to hire more military spouses. This legislation exempts military spouses from being counted toward the number of employees required by Obamacare’s employer mandate. It gives small businesses a relief from Obamacare’s punitive mandate and offers an incentive to hire more military spouses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, military spouses have an unemployment rate of up to 18 percent.
