Family Values
Principles
- Preserving values for healthy families
- Preserve religious liberty
- Protect the sanctity of human life
As a husband and father of three, I strongly believe in preserving family values and protecting the life of our most innocent—the unborn. Life begins at the moment of conception and, therefore, the unborn baby should receive all the rights and protections afforded to every citizen under the Constitution.

To prevent federal funding for abortions or abortion providers, I am a cosponsor of H.R. 217, the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, offered by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN). This bill would prohibit federal funding under Title X, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, for any entity that performs an abortion. Title X is the main source of funding that supports Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.
I am an original cosponsor of the Life at Conception Act to prohibit abortions by declaring that life begins at conception. This measure is a legislative approach to effectively overturn Roe v. Wade by establishing personhood under the 5th and 14th Amendments.
I support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman. Although the President has ceased defense of DOMA in federal courts, I support the decision of House Speaker John Boehner to defend DOMA by providing legal counsel.
I voted in favor of amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act, now Public Law 112-81, that would restrict the use of federal property for same-sex marriage ceremonies and provide additional protections to Chaplains for the expression of their beliefs. I also signed a letter to the Secretary of Defense, along with a number of my colleagues, to express my frustrations for the President’s statement that criticized these conscience protections and to make clear that despite these comments, the DOD has an obligation to execute the law, as written.
