HUNTER STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S DECISION TO WITHDRAW U.S. FROM IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL

May 8, 2018 Issues: National Security

Washington, DC -- Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-50), member of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following statement regarding President Trump’s announcement that the United States would withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Iran Nuclear Deal:

The Iranian nuclear deal should never have been entered into and I applaud President Trump for taking a renewed focus on this issue from a national security perspective and having the courage and conviction to take action when deciding that our continued participation was not in America’s best interest.  It is imperative that our foreign policy decisions regarding this volatile region be consistent with the long-term interests of the U.S. and our allies.  I trust the President and his team’s review of information that is not publicly available in determining that the Iranian deal did not meet this threshold.  Today’s action presents the opportunity to better hold the Iranian regime accountable for its decisions and I look forward to working with the President and my colleagues toward a stronger approach.”
