Committees and Caucuses

U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy serves on the powerful House Committee on Armed Services and the House Committee on Small Business, where she is actively working to create a stronger, safer, and more prosperous region for central Floridians.

Armed Services Committee

Congresswoman Murphy is a former national security specialist at the U.S. Department of Defense and will serve on the powerful Committee on Armed Services in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 115th Congress. The House Armed Services Committee (HASC) considers the annual defense authorization bill, which authorizes the operations of the Department of Defense as well as national security functions of the Department of Energy and other related areas. The annual defense budget involves millions of military and civilian personnel, thousands of facilities, and hundreds of agencies, departments, and commands located throughout the world.

From cybersecurity to terrorism, Congresswoman Murphy is working to ensue our service members have the resources and training they need to adapt to rapidly-evolving threats, and she will continue to work with both Democrats and Republicans to help keep our country safe. She is also working to ensure our military families and veterans have the full support they deserve.

Florida is home to numerous military installations and hundreds of thousands of military personnel, veterans, and their families. Central Florida is also home to a renowned modeling, simulation, and training sector that assists our Armed Forces with military readiness. It's also a $5 billion industry in Florida that employs more than 30,000 people statewide. Orlando also hosts the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC)—the world’s largest modeling, simulation and training conference. Additionally, Florida’s Seventh Congressional District is home to the National Center for Simulation and the University of Central Florida Institute for Simulation and Training, both of which provide our military with cutting-edge technology and training.

Congresswoman Murphy is working on HASC to help create well-paying jobs for central Florida by bringing together the public, private, and academic sectors to continue central Florida's progress in preparing our military for 21st century threats and attracting the jobs of the future.

Small Business Committee

A former businesswoman herself, Congresswoman Murphy is working to support and grow central Florida entrepreneurs and small businesses through her work on the House Small Business Committee.

The House Committee on Small Business provides direct oversight and consideration of matters affecting small businesses in the United States and is the primary venue for small business policy matters. The Committee focuses on assistance and protection of small businesses, including financial aid, regulatory flexibility, and paperwork reduction. The Committee also ensures small business participation in federal procurement and government contracts.

Congresswoman Murphy believes small businesses are the backbone of our economy – employing more than 3.1 million people across our state. In fact, more than 40 percent of workers in Florida are employed by a small business. And, according to the Small Business Administration, 98.9 percent of all businesses in Florida are small businesses.

As someone who has worked in the private sector advising and counseling entrepreneurs and small businesses, Congresswoman Murphy is working to reduce the regulatory burdens on small businesses, increase their access to capital, and help strengthen our region’s economy by creating more well-paying jobs. She is also working in a bipartisan manner to pass legislation that encourages more women- and minority-owned small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Congresswoman Murphy will use her role on both the Armed Services and Small Business Committees to help position central Florida as a magnet for entrepreneurs, new jobs, and innovative industries.
