Did You Know...

First Woman on the Supreme Court

President Ronald Reagan nominated Judge Sandra Day O’Connor to fill the seat of retired Justice Potter Stewart, noting that she was a “person for all seasons.” On September 21, 1981, the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed her appointment by a vote of 99-0. Four days later she took her seat on the Bench and made history as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. O’Connor served on the Court for 24 years until her retirement on January 31, 2006.

An exhibit, Sandra Day O’Connor: First Woman on the Supreme Court, as well as Justice O’Connor’s portrait, is on view on the ground floor of the Supreme Court Building.
