Congressman Ralph Abraham

Representing the 5th District of Louisiana

Security

As a member of Congress, one of my greatest responsibilities is to take measures to keep our country safe.  There are many threats to our national security, and I do not take any of these threats lightly. Radical Islamic terrorism is one of the most pressing threats to our national security in modern times. It is pivotal that we recognize the threat, label it accordingly and fight to end it. For this reason, in 2017 I cosponsored the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2017 which would require the Secretary of State to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization.

With groups like ISIS vying for control in the Middle East and making their way into Europe, it is even more necessary for Americans to be vigilant in defense of the Republic. On Jan. 27, 2017, President Trump signed an Executive Order on Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements.  The implementation of this vetting is necessary to protect our borders, and I applaud President Trump for putting the safety of the American people first.

Any form of radicalism or tyranny cannot be tolerated.  I support our president’s policies not only on ISIS, but also in regards to the regime of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria. Syria is a failed state. Prior to the election of Donald J. Trump, I was against allowing a vast influx of Syrian refugees into the country, and in recent months I commended President Trump when he took swift action against the chemical attacks of the Assad government.  It is a good sign that the world’s superpower is back in a leadership role in world affairs.

Leadership on the world stage has many facets other than just military intervention. That’s why in May of 2017 I voted for H.Res. 252 which supported the establishment of Safe Zones in Syria.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the importance of a strong American military. It is pivotal that our servicemen and women are fully prepared, equipped and supported so that when they enter a conflict, they can claim victory in a swift and decisive fashion. That being said it is just as important that when our men and women in uniform come home, that they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Another important aspect of national security is immigration. I support President Trump’s pledge to build a wall on the southern border of the United States. It is a necessary and long overdue step in the process of ending the deluge of illegal immigrants that flood across our border.  To further remedy the problems of illegal immigration, I voted in favor of Kate’s Law, which cracks down on illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the states, and the No Sanctuary For Criminals Act, which would word to defund sanctuary cities.

I am proud to say that the United States is back to leading from a position of strength, and I will always strive to do my part to protect the country.
