WASHINGTON - Iraq has agreed to purchase 15,000 metric tons of rice from the United States in a new deal that will benefit American rice producers.

Iraq recently concluded a 30,000 metric ton rice tender. The United States will provide half of that rice while Uruguay will provide the other half.

It's a win for the waterways. Congress is awarding money to four projects on the water, including the Port of Lake Providence.

Farmers are the backbone of the Delta, and the Port of Lake Providence is the largest inland port on the Mississippi River. Last week, U.S. Congress allocated $1.315 million for dredging.

U.S. Rep. Dr. Ralph Abraham, R-La., announced Monday that the town of Franklinton will receive $75,000 in federal funds to purchase two new police vehicles and equipment.

The grant comes from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Community Facilities Grant Program. The grant will cover the total cost of the purchase.

Congress moved a bill forward Wednesday to ban killing dogs and cats for food. 

The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2018 prohibits the intentional slaughtering for human consumption. Forty-four states allow it to happen, said legislators seeking to completely outlaw the practice. Only four states specifically ban it., Rep. Ralph Abraham, R-Louisiana, said.

Members of Louisiana's Congressional delegation will hold an event Saturday in Baton Rouge for high schoolers interested in attending the nation's Military, Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine academies.
