Did you know that Earth Day was this weekend? I'm proud of our work over the last year to protect critical funding for our Great Lakes from proposed cuts by President Trump, as well as to address the threat of invasive species.

First, an update on Syria. On Friday, President Trump ordered U.S. military strikes against 3 chemical weapons-related targets in Syria in response to the Bashar al-Assad’s chemical attacks on his own citizens.

Last week was another active one, both in Washington and at home. Congress at last passed a bill funding the government through the end of the fiscal year, ending the absurd cycle of shutdowns and continuing resolutions that harms both our nation’s military and federal agencies.

Last week, I was very proud that, by an overwhelming majority of 417-10, the House passed a bipartisan proposal I introduced with Mike Bost (R-IL) to help schools install panic alert buttons in classrooms.

Yesterday, President Trump announced his latest position on measures to address school safety. Unfortunately these proposals do not go nearly far enough to even begin to modestly address the national epidemic of gun violence.

Last week was a District Work Period and I had the opportunity to meet with constituents in my office and throughout the district. Everywhere I went, and in particular in conversations with students at Lake Forest College, College of Lake County and Neal Math and Science Academy in North Chicago, I was asked about two particular issues: (1) reducing gun violence to better protect our children, and (2) ensuring the integrity of the upcoming elections.
