Wilmington, DE – Senator Tom Carper and Congressman Mike Castle will participate in a press conference on Thursday, August 19, 2004, at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute to help announce a five year, $16.5 million biomedical research and infrastructure grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH). This grant involves a collaboration among five Delaware institutions: the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Delaware Technical and Community College, Wesley College and Christiana Care Health System. The program will be managed by the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, a unit of the University of Delaware. The focus of the NIH program is to support biomedical research in Delaware, build necessary infrastructure, and increase Delaware’s future competitiveness for federal research funding. The program, known as the INBRE (Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) begins this month and ends in June 2009, and will have an annual budget of approximately $3.2 million. The INBRE grant is part of a larger Delaware initiative to establish a life science, education and business sector in the state. This $16.5 million grant is one of the largest awarded by the NIH to institutions in Delaware.
