Wilmington, Delaware -- Senator Carper will begin Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the 20th anniversary observance of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located at 18th and Baynard Boulevard in Wilmington. The Senator will read from a list of names of those Delawareans who lost their lives in Vietnam. The event is hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 83, and New Castle County. Senator Tom Carper will then greet Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden as they honor the 365th Jubilee of the founding of the New Sweden Colony in 1638. Her Royal Highness is the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and heir to the Swedish throne. While in Delaware, Crown Princess Victoria will tour the Kalmar Nyckel. The original ship brought the first permanent European settlers to the Delaware Valley in the 1630s. She landed on the banks of the Christina River at a site now known as "The Rocks." In 1986, a group of committed citizens established the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation to design, build and launch a replica of the ship. Then-Governor Carper was instrumental in gaining financial support from the state for the project. On September 28, 1997, the Kalmar Nyckel was launched. Today, the fully functional, sail-training vessel is a focal point for tourism and education. Saturday, November 8, 2003
