As a former firefighter, I always welcome the opportunity to reconnect with my first responder brothers and sisters. I had the pleasure of dropping in on the Mascoutah Fire Department at their weekly meeting to thank them for what they do.

John B. Matheny paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom on November 20, 1944. I had the honor of presenting World War II medals to his son, Charles, at my office in O'Fallon. God bless John Matheny and all who gave their lives in defense of our nation.

As a survivor of a politically motivated attack, it is tragic to think this is an acceptable state of political discourse in our country. I refuse to stand for it. Democratic leaders need to condemn, rather than promote these dangerous calls to action.
