Today kicks off #HispanicHeritageMonth - a time to give thanks for the extraordinary contributions the Hispanic community has made to LA and the country, as well as a time for us to recommit our resolve to continue to stand with them in the growing face of hatred and racism.

The Latinx community in Los Angeles has enriched our city with activism. In 1948, protestors gathered at the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Watts, which was picketed for not hiring African American or Mexican American tellers.

Sylvia Mendez grew up in California at a time when Latinxs weren’t allowed to attend schools designated for “whites only”. Ms. Mendez would eventually bring to an end the era of segregated education.
