Go talk to your colleague @johnculberson. He's squashed DoT funding for light rail in Houston.

That ship sailed when they ripped out the tracks in order to widen the freeway.
-
Wait, Houston had tracks and they *RIPPED THEM OUT*? WHY!?
-
Exactly.
-
Sacramento just bought the tracks that paralleled 50 and 80 from the company that owned them and turned them into light rail. Years later, it's probably one of the best investments Sacramento ever made. They've been expanding the lines up the tracks into the next county, even.

Agree, but it needs to make sense. Not just a line from@downtown to a sports venue. Move folks where they travel... not where you want them to go & spemd money.

Houston does not have the population density required to make these systems economic.
-
Sacramento, California, isn't exactly the most population-dense place in the world, but they've got a pretty well-thought-out system for light rail and bus lines.
-
Houston has light rail and bus already -- and it is a bit of a joke. It just doesn't make sense to add more rail. Houston is less dense than even Sacramento as well (~3000 p/sq mi vs. ~4000 p/sq mi).
-
Those density numbers are just gonna keep climbing for Houston as time goes by. Either that, or Houston will continue to blob out and become a completely unmanageable traffic mess. Either way, good public transportation can help.
-
Houston will continue to blob out. That ~3000p/sq mi is over an enormous (metro = 10,000 sq mi), sprawling, growing area.
