Opportunities and Resources for Women Veterans

This section provides information about select resources for women Veterans.  The Department of Veterans Affairs does not sponsor or endorse any non-governmental organization listed.  Thousands of national, state, and local resources are available for Veterans, wounded warriors, service members, survivors, their families, and caregivers; search for those best for you on the National Resource Directory.

Veterans of the United States armed forces may be eligible for a broad range of benefits and services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  Some of these benefits may be utilized while on active duty.  These benefits are codified in Title 38 of the United States Code.  This booklet contains a summary of these benefits.

In the Spotlight … Staying Active

Physical activity is key to health, and any amount is better than none.  With support from VA and community partners, women Veterans of virtually any age and ability level can find a way to pursue their chosen life pursuits!  Here’s a short selection of programs available at the national, regional, and local levels:

  • Veterans of all ages and abilities report better health, new friendships and a better quality of life when participating in VA Adaptive Sports.  Veterans with disabilities who are physically active simply have more fun!  VA hosts both a Summer and Winter Sports Clinic, Golden Age Games, TEE Tournament, and Wheelchair Games.  Many local VA Medical Centers provide Recreation Therapy services for individuals and groups.
  • Team Red, White and Blue (Team RWB) is a nationwide chapter-based organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of America’s Veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.
  • Team River Runner provides Veterans and their families an opportunity to find health, healing, community purpose, and new challenges through adventure and adaptive paddle sports.
  • From building and donating adaptive bikes and producing cycling events throughout the nation to supporting community-based rehabilitation and recovery programs and important medical and clinical research, Project Hero is raising awareness of the national PTSD mental health crisis and making a difference in the lives of thousands of Veterans; they have helped more than 10,000 Veterans and First Responders through cycling-based programs and other events.
  • Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.
  • In the Southeast, Bridge II Sports runs year-round adapted sports programs including cycling, golf, air rifle, archery, wheelchair basketball, goal ball (blind and low vision), boccia, fishing, track and field, and sitting volleyball; Valor Games SE is their largest military affiliated event of the year.
  • VETSports provides thousands of Veterans with continuous opportunities to reintegrate into their communities through sports, community service, events, and partnership.

Items of interest specifically for women at VA:

Housing Stability

VA has services for women Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Get information about VA programs and serivces to end homelessness among women Veterans.

Military Sexual Trauma (MST)

MST is the term that VA uses to refer to sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment that occurred while the Veteran was in the military.  Get more information on VA services and benefits related to MST.  The Department of Defense (DoD) also provides Sexual Assault Support External link to a non-government website for the DoD community.

Rural Veterans

The VHA Office of Rural Health works to optimize the use of available and emerging technologies, establish new access points to care, and employ strategies to increase health care options for all rural Veterans.

Veterans who reside in rural communities that need a ride should contact the Veterans Transportation Mobility Manager at their local VA medical center.  Veterans or caregivers can go to the Veterans Transportation Service website and view the appropriate state or scroll down the page for the contact information at participating VA medical centers.

Veteran Entrepreneurs
Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs)

VA provides an online list of VSOs as an information service by the Office of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  Some VSOs have programs for or research on women Veterans, including the DAV External link to a non-government website.
