Opioid Treatment Program (OTP)
Opioid use disorder treatment is available in a variety of forms. Recovery is possible, and research shows that a combination of medication and treatment counseling offer much more effective results.
Historically, the phrase "Opioid Treatment Programs" referred to Methadone-specific treatment programs. While the topic is related, the Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) funding by the Department is separate from the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) grant from SAMHSA. One of the providers, United Community Services, serves as a provider for both programs. The main difference is that OTP providers utilize Methadone as the medication option for patients, while MAT-PDOA funded providers are tasked with expanding and enhancing the MAT options. Thus, MAT providers select from 5 medication options to serve patients. An additional difference is that the funding for OTPs is renewed yearly, while the MAT grant is a limited 3 year federal grant.
