In October 2018, 56 metropolitan areas had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment and 332 were essentially unchanged. The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+117,800), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+109,000), and New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA (+108,500).

Access to paid military leave in 2018
Many civilian workers also serve in the military through the National Guard or Reserves. These workers sometimes need to take time off from their civilian jobs for military training or because they have been called to active duty. Some employers provide these workers with paid leave while they are in military service. In March 2018, 28 percent of private industry workers and 70 percent of state and local government workers had access to employer-provided paid military leave.

Maricopa, Arizona, had largest 12-month percent job gains among 10 largest counties in June 2018
Maricopa, Arizona, had the largest percentage employment gain (2.8 percent) among the 10 largest U.S. counties from June 2017 to June 2018. Among the major industries in Maricopa, construction experienced the largest percentage increase in employment over that period (7.1 percent). Trade, transportation, and utilities had the largest over-the-year employment increase with a gain of 10,775 jobs, or 2.9 percent.

Unemployment rate lowest in Hawaii, highest in Alaska, in October 2018
In October 2018, 14 states had unemployment rates lower than the U.S. rate of 3.7 percent, and 11 states and the District of Columbia had higher rates. The remaining 25 states had unemployment rates that were not significantly different from that of the nation as a whole.

36 states added jobs in year ending October 2018
Thirty-six states had over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment in October. The largest job gains occurred in Texas (+384,800), California (+308,700), and Florida (+232,600). The largest percentage gain occurred in Nevada (+3.4 percent), followed by Utah and Washington (+3.3 percent each).
