Every summer, the Indiana State Personnel Department (INSPD) administers the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship program. This internship program was created in 1989 to introduce bright and motivated college students to the operations and officials of state government. This program provides interns the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as well as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experience.

Governor’s Summer Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on a predetermined project that enhances college-level skills and abilities. Plus, these are paid internships! In 2018 interns are paid $11.30 per hour and college credit is given to the students if approved by their respective colleges and universities. 

In 2017, more than 160 interns were hired in 32 executive branch agencies. The internships attract students from many areas of study including engineering, business, communications, finance, agriculture and veterinary science. There are also co-curricular components of the program to ensure it is competitive, reputable and inclusive of experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort activities on a weekly basis designed to enable:

• Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
• Exposure to many facets of state government
• Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort

INSPD facilitates internship events on the Government Center campus designed to meet the goals stated above. Events included panel discussions with state government leaders, professional development seminars like a soft skills workshop, and tours of state and community assets like the War Memorial. 

To be considered for this internship program, candidates must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.​
