The Cannon House Office Building has not received a comprehensive systems upgrade since the 1930s, and many of the building's systems are original – dating back to 1908 or earlier. These systems are past the end of their useful lives and the increasing risk of their failure jeopardizes the building's long-term functionality and safety. Other necessary work includes upgrading infrastructure systems and repairing the exterior stone façade. Full project details are at aoc.gov/cannon. This is a multi-phased project designed to address deferred maintenance, extend the life expectancy of the deteriorated stone and to replace missing elements of the U.S. Capitol Building. The stone preservation work includes cleaning of the stone and pediment sculpture, replacement of the mortar and sealants at all of the stone joints, treatment of the carved stone and pediment sculpture, replacement of stone where elements are missing or cannot be repaired, and replacement of the bird deterrent systems. The project also includes preservation of the architectural metals. Full project details are at aoc.gov/stone/capitol. The U.S. Botanic Garden will remain fully open and accessible throughout construction. During construction, the stone façade will be fenced-in, but accessible paths around the Conservatory will remain open. Access to the National Garden will remain available through two entrances on Maryland Avenue SW and Independence Ave SW. Some of the restoration work could create noise, but will occur before the Conservatory opens and have minimal impact on visitors. Full project details are at aoc.gov/projects/conservatory-facade-and-roof-restoration. The Rayburn Garage Interior Rehabilitation will replace structural concrete and waterproofing joints to extend the life of the garage for 50 years. The rehabilitation will also bring the garage levels up to code compliance for mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems. Full project details are at aoc.gov/rayburn. The Architect of the Capitol, in conjunction with the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, has developed a five-phase restoration project to preserve the exterior envelope of the century-old building, including its exterior stone, wood windows and glazed doors. The project also includes the rehabilitation of the balcony flooring, balusters, balustrades and roof chimney. Full project details are at aoc.gov/stone/russell. The Architect of the Capitol is undertaking a multi-year project to renovate this area. The Senate Underground Garage and a large portion of Senate Park will remain inaccessible throughout the project, which is expected to be complete in early fall 2020. Full project details are at aoc.gov/projects/senate-underground-garage-and-landscape-restoration. Scaffolding will surround the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol dome while it undergoes cleaning, inspection, maintenance and conservation efforts. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the 2018 calendar year. Full project details are at aoc.gov/projects/statue-freedom-conservation-work. Project work includes the removal of the building's veneer and replacement of damaged stone panels on the building's façade. Full project details are at aoc.gov/marshall. Project work includes repair of water infiltration problems, replacement of interior finishes, crack repairs, a new traffic surface topping, and upgrades to the lighting and sprinkler systems. Full project details are at aoc.gov/marshall-garage. The early stages of this work, beginning in March 2017, will necessitate blocking public access to the top tier of the north side of the plaza. This is in preparation for the larger continuing repair program to the memorial, which focuses is on repairing, cleaning and waterproofing the remaining stone portions of the memorial. Work includes replacing missing sections of balustrade, stone lamp bases and resetting marble pavers and steps on the upper plaza. Full project details are at aoc.gov/grant.Map
