  • ?Text Search: Search for projects that contain specific words or phrases of interest. A text search is conducted within project titles, project terms, and abstracts.
    Choose one of the three Boolean logic options to evaluate the text entry: AND, OR, ADVANCED.     Text Search
  • ?Fiscal Year: Choose "All" or combination of one or more prior fiscal years to return awards funded in the selected years.
    Federal RePORTER contains awards data for the past 10 fiscal years.     Fiscal Year
  • ?Agency: The entity responsible for the administering of a research grant, project, or contract. This may represent a federal department, agency, or sub-agency (institute or center). Details on agencies in Federal RePORTER can be found in the FAQ page. Agency
  • ?Principal Investigator / Project Leader: Principal Investigator / Project Leader: The individual designated by the grantee to direct the project supported by the grant. Searches for projects conducted by a particular individual can either be performed by entering their last name, first name, or both.
    A maximum of 100 entries are allowed at a time. Each name pair (first name and/or last name) must be separated by a semi-colon. Use the %wildcard feature when only partial information is known. Order of first and last name does not matter.
    Examples, "Firstname LastName;" or "Lastname, Firstname M;" or "Lastname Firstname;" or "Lastname;" or "Firstname;”.     PI
  • ?Organization: Use to search for an institution that receives a grant, contract or cooperative agreement. The LOOKUP feature will offer selections that meet the 3-character minimum user entry that occur anywhere in the organizations name. Organization
  • ?Project Number: The unique identification number assigned to each project. You can enter a single project number or multiple project numbers each separated by a comma ",". Use wildcard (e.g., %R21%) if only a portion of a project number is known when searching for one or more projects. Project Number
  • And ?Instructions And: Find projects in which all of the search terms are found. For example, a search on brain disorder will retrieve projects containing both "brain" and "disorder".
    Maximum of 2500 characters including spaces are allowed at a time.
  • Or ?Instructions Or: Find projects that contain at least one of the search terms entered. For example, a search on brain disorder will retrieve all projects containing either "brain" or "disorder".

  • Advanced ?Instructions Advanced: Boolean search with following operands:

    and - to search for all terms, ex: breast and cancer
    or - to search for any term, ex: cancer or tumor
    not - to exclude a term from search, ex: cancer not tumor
    double-quoted (" ") - to search for exact phrase, ex: "lung cancer"
    parenthesis - to group the search terms, ex: (breast and cancer) or tumor

    You can mix and match multiple operands, for ex:(breast and cancer or "lung cancer") not tumor.

Federal RePORTER is a collaborative effort led by STAR METRICS® to create a searchable database of scientific awards from agencies. This database promotes transparency and engages the public, the research community, and agencies to describe federal science research investments and provide empirical data for science policy. Users can search across multiple fields in both the Smart Search and Advanced Search functions-including across agencies or fiscal years, by the award's project leader, or by a text search of a project's title, terms, or abstracts.
