The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) funds foreign institutions
in sub-Saharan African countries that receive PEPFAR support and their partners to develop or expand and enhance models of medical education. Initial MEPI grants received support from 2010 through 2015.
MEPI aims to advance PEPFAR's goal of increasing the number of new health care workers by 140,000; strengthen in-country medical education systems; and build clinical and research capacity in Africa as part of a retention strategy for faculty of medical schools and clinical professors.
MEPI supports African institutions in a dozen countries, forming a network including more than 30 regional partners, country health and education ministries, and more than 20 U.S. and foreign collaborators.
NIH support for Research Training for Career Development of Junior Faculty in MEPI Institutions
Beginning in September 2015, NIH is supporting
Research Training for Career Development of Junior Faculty in Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Institutions to strengthen the capacity of MEPI institutions to participate in and carry out locally relevant research that contributes to improved human health, and to foster the next generation of faculty researchers in Africa.
