Health Education

The staff at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System have provided a number of ways for you to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle and self-manage your own health. For more information on any of the programs listed below, contact the Patient Health Education Coordinator at 973-676-1000 ext. 3505 or 4583.

Patient Education Resource Centers at Each Campus and Brick CBOC

Our Patient Education Centers are staffed by experienced patient education technicians. The centers contain collections of easy-to-read health and wellness books, respected health education newsletters, videos and other materials and computers for health research. Health education classes are offered to the veterans most months.

My HealtheVet

The My HealtheVet site provides veterans and their families excellent, reliable patient education information as well as the latest VA News. Information about veterans benefits and services is also available.

Upon registering with My HealtheVet, you will be able to —

  • refill prescriptions online
  • keep personal food and activity journals
  • monitor your personal health data, such as blood pressure and pain levels
  • maintain your own self-entered personal health record

Outpatient Health Education

Clinical staff provide ongoing health education during regularly scheduled outpatient clinic visits. Information focuses on health promotion, upcoming tests and procedures, medications, diagnoses and treatments.

Inpatient Health Education

Clinical staff begin the patient education process at the time of admission, during the hospital stay, and at discharge. Our goal is to provide a hospital environment where patients continually receive updated health information, are able to ask questions about their health, can enjoy as comfortably as possible their stay in our facility.


M.O.V.E.

Motivating overweight veterans is a class that meets weekly at both the East Orange and Lyons Campuses. The class teaches the veteran to make life style changes through behavior modification and on appropriate food choices and also includes tips on exercise and safety. Speak to your Provider.

Veteran Orientation

This class is given monthly at both the East Orange and Lyons Campuses. This program is to help the veteran navigate the VA system and answer any of their questions. Subject matter experts speak on:

  • Primary Care
  • CBOC
  • MCCR
  • Pharmacy
  • Benefits

Chronic Disease Self Management Program

This is a six week class that meets for 2 hours per week for veterans and their caregivers who have a chronic illness or takes care of someone with a chronic illness. This program will help teach veterans how to live a healthier and more satisfying life.
