War Wounded (OEF/OIF) VHI

Two soldiers in combat gear running

Clinicians can learn about the experiences and exposures of combat Veterans who served in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan from the Veterans Health Initiative (VHI) study guide, Caring for War Wounded (2.15 MB, PDF).

Many of these Veterans are coming to VA for diagnosis and treatment of serious, as well as milder, injuries. The study guide was developed to assist clinicians in providing expert care for today’s returning service members.

Sections include:

  • Environmental and endemic hazards of deployment to Southwest Asia
  • VA health care benefits after combat deployment
  • Injuries associated with chemical warfare agents, pesticides, and biological and radiologic warfare
  • Family support program for Veterans

The guide is useful for VA and non-VA health care providers caring for Veteran patients. Veterans and the public also may be interested in the guide to learn more about symptoms and treatment.
