U.S. crude oil production exceeds forecasts mp3
Date: November 6, 2018
Description: U.S. crude oil production exceeded 11 million barrels per day in August 2018, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The total marks a new record for U.S. crude oil production and led EIA to revise its forecast of U.S. production for 2018 and 2019. In its November Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA continues to forecast record U.S. crude oil production through 2019, increasing the forecast for production in 2018 by 1.5% and by almost 3% in 2019 compared with last month's forecast. The revised forecast now expects U.S. crude oil production to exceed an average of 12 million barrels per day in 2019.

New records for U.S. dry natural gas production mp3
Date: November 6, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts U.S. dry natural gas production to average more than 83 billion cubic feet per day in 2018. If the forecast holds, natural gas production in 2018 will exceed 2017's average by 11%, or more than 8 billion cubic feet per day. The annual average and the rate of increase are both records. In its November Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts U.S. dry natural gas production will continue to set new records through 2019. EIA currently forecasts production to average almost 90 billion cubic feet per day in 2019. The new records come in time to support the growing role of natural gas in U.S. utility-scale electricity generation, which is forecast to reach 35% of the generation fuels mix this year-the largest source of fuel for electricity in the United States. Data in the November outlook suggest record consumption of natural gas last summer pushed inventories lower than the recent 5-year average, but the forecast expects inventories to recover in 2019 as a result of strong production growth.

Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its Winter Fuels Outlook this week and is forecasting higher household energy bills during the 2018-2019 heating season, largely due to higher crude oil and natural gas prices during 2018. In its October Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects natural gas expenditures to rise by 5%. Roughly 50% of U.S. households use natural gas for heating. The forecast expects heating oil expenditures to increase by 20% this winter. Nearly one-in-five Northeast homes depend heating oil. Electricity expenditures increase by 3% in the forecast. The South, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, uses electricity as its predominant source of heating. The Winter Fuels Outlook notes that weather forecasts can change, and actual weather patterns can vary sharply. Consumption and prices are sensitive to these variations.

Crude oil production grows mp3
Date: October 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts U.S. crude oil production will set a new record in 2018. The forecast expects U.S. production to average 10.7 million barrels per day in 2018, up by almost 15% from just last year. In its October Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that U.S. crude oil production in 2018 will surpass the annual average barrel per day record set in 1970. EIA recently reported that in 2018 U.S. crude oil production topped output from Saudi Arabia and Russia for the first time since the 1990s. Also this year, production increases among OPEC members and Russia were tempered by sharp decreases in Venezuela and Iran, resulting in OPEC's lowest spare production capacity level since 2016. The October report estimates that U.S. crude oil production averaged 11 million barrels per day in September 2018, and it forecasts an annual average of 11.8 million barrels per day for 2019.

U.S. electricity generation turning to natural gas mp3
Date: October 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that natural gas is continuing to displace coal in the U.S. utility-scale electricity generation fuel mix. In 2018, natural gas will increase to 35% of generation, a 3 percentage point increase above its share in 2017. Over the same period, coal generation will decrease by 2 percentage points in 2018, falling to 28% of generation. In its October Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that utility-scale generation will increasingly rely on natural gas through 2019. The outlook expects natural gas-fired power plants to generate 35% of electricity in 2019. Coal's share, by contrast, is expected to decrease to 27%, which would be down from 30% in 2017. The October report forecasts U.S. dry natural gas production was nearly 85 billion cubic feet per day in September 2018. The forecast for 2019 expects production to average nearly 88 billion cubic feet per day-a new U.S. record.

EIA revises forecasted crude oil prices upward mp3
Date: September 11, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration has revised its forecast for Brent crude oil and West Texas Intermediate spot prices for the final quarter of 2018. Both forecasts increased by more than 5%, as EIA lowered expectations for Canadian crude oil production and condensate production among the OPEC countries. In its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects Brent spot prices will average $73 per barrel in 2018 and $74 per barrel in 2019. WTI spot prices, in turn, average roughly $6 below the forecast for Brent prices in both years. EIA also notes that several factors could cause prices to deviate from this forecast, including unplanned supply disruptions and a potential slowdown in economic global economic growth.

U.S. natural gas inventories fall below the five-year average mp3
Date: September 11, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts U.S. natural gas inventories to end October 2018 nearly 13% below the five-year average, just before the winter heating season begins. In its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates that high demand, especially in the electricity generation sector, helped push U.S. natural gas consumption in both July and August to record levels for those months. The high electric power sector demand for gas was the result of a warm summer that pushed up use of air conditioning in much of the country. The high levels of demand have limited the supply available for injection into storage, and EIA estimates natural gas inventories will fall 19% below the five-year average at the end of August. However, despite the high consumption, prices have not moved significantly higher, as the September forecast expects U.S. dry natural gas production to increase by 10% in 2018 to a record high 81 billion cubic feet per day, before climbing to 85 billion cubic feet per day in 2019.

The U.S. electricity generation fuels mix continues to shift mp3
Date: August 7, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting the shift toward natural gas to continue for U.S. utility-scale electricity generation over the next two years. EIA estimates that the share of electricity generated from natural gas in the United States will average about 34% for 2018. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is reporting that natural gas will continue claiming a larger portion of total U.S. utility-scale electricity generation, eventually reaching 35% of the generation fuels mix by the end of 2019. Wind and solar will likely make significant gains over the same time period as well; wind power itself is expected to overtake hydropower as the largest source of renewable electricity in 2019. All nonhydropower renewables combined are forecast to generate 11% of utility-scale electricity in 2019. Coal's share of U.S. electricity generation is declining over the same time period, falling from 30% in 2017 to a forecasted 27% in 2019.

U.S. natural gas exports forecast to surpass records mp3
Date: August 7, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is reporting that U.S. net exports of natural gas will increase significantly through 2019. EIA's August Short-Term Energy Outlook forecasts that U.S. net natural gas exports will climb from 0.3 billion cubic feet per day in 2017 to more than 5 billion cubic feet per day in 2019. New infrastructure coming online and expected increases in overall production, which is forecast to reach a record 81.1 billion cubic feet per day in 2018, are the key contributors to the forecast. According the outlook, pipeline exports are set to grow from 6.7 billion cubic feet per day in 2017 to nearly 8.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2019. Most of these exports will go to Mexico, where new gas-fired power plants are under construction.

A warmer summer could mean higher electric bills mp3
Date: July 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects the average U.S. residential electricity bill to be 3.8% higher for the summer period of June through August, compared with last summer. The higher expected bills are a result of forecasts for slightly warmer temperatures and higher retail prices. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects the typical U.S. residential electricity bill will average $143 per month during the summer of 2018. However, electricity bills vary by a region's dependence on air conditioning and its prices. This summer, average bills are expected to be higher than last summer in all U.S. Census regions except the Mountain and Pacific Regions. Forecasted changes to summer electricity bills compared with last year range from a 9% increase in the West North Central Region to a 4% decrease in the Pacific Region.

EIA expects that 2018 gasoline prices have peaked mp3
Date: July 10, 2018
Description: Summer gasoline prices may have already peaked according to the latest forecast from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. U.S. regular-grade retail gasoline prices averaged $2.89 per gallon in June, down from a high of $2.96 per gallon on May 28. EIA currently forecasts that monthly average gasoline prices will remain lower than the May 28 price for the rest of the summer, reaching $2.83 per gallon in September. Gasoline prices are often higher in summer months when gasoline demand is higher and when federal and state environmental regulations require the use of summer-grade gasoline, which is more expensive to manufacture. Following the summer, EIA expects gasoline prices to decline to an average of $2.70 per gallon by December.

United States forecast to become world's largest producer of crude mp3
Date: July 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is reporting that U.S. crude oil production averaged 10.9 million barrels per day in June, up 100,000 barrels per day from May. In its July Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is forecasting that U.S. crude oil production will average 10.8 million barrels per day in 2018. That average is an increase from 9.4 million barrels per day in 2017. The Outlook also expects production to average 11.8 million barrels per day in 2019. Assuming both forecasts hold, these levels would surpass the previous record set in 1970. If the forecasts are realized, the United States will be the largest producer of crude oil in the world in 2018 and 2019.

U.S. dry natural gas production on pace for record years mp3
Date: July 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is reporting that U.S. dry natural gas production will reach record levels in 2018 and 2019. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is reporting that U.S. dry natural gas production averaged 73.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2017 and that 2018 will see that average increase to 81.3 billion cubic feet per day-a new record. EIA expects natural gas production to rise again next year, exceeding 84 billion cubic feet per day, if the forecast holds. Improved drilling efficiency and cost reductions, coupled with higher crude oil prices, are reported to contribute to the production growth, which is further supported by forecasted growth in exports of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, and by pipeline exports.

Net imports of crude oil and petroleum products hit historic lows mp3
Date: June 12, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting that net U.S. crude oil and petroleum product imports will decrease to levels not seen since 1959, during the Eisenhower Administration. EIA's forecast expects net import levels to average about 1.6 million barrels per day in 2019 and to fall below the 1 million barrel per day mark in December of 2019. In its June Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is reporting that net U.S. crude oil and petroleum product imports totaled 3.7 million barrels per day in 2017 and is forecasting a 34% decrease to 2.5 million barrels per day in 2018. If the June forecast holds, the decrease from 2018 to 2019 will approach 40%. The expected reduction in net imports is being driven by rising domestic crude oil production along with increased exports of crude oil and petroleum products. For 2018, EIA forecasts U.S. crude oil production to average 10.8 million barrels per day, which would mark a new record high for average annual U.S. production.

Liquefied natural gas exports growing rapidly mp3
Date: June 12, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is reporting that U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, are expected to increase significantly over the next 18 months. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is forecasting LNG exports to rise from 1.9 billion cubic feet per day in 2017 to 3 billion cubic feet per day in 2018-an increase of about 52% , with a further increase to 5 billion cubic feet per day expected in 2019. EIA attributes the increase to historic levels of U.S. natural gas production and new LNG export infrastructure coming online in 2018 and 2019.

Retail motor gasoline prices higher than expected mp3
Date: May 8, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is revising up its forecast for the price of regular-grade gasoline. Drivers can now expect to see an average of $2.90 per gallon during the summer driving season of 2018, which runs from April through September. In its May Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is increasing the forecast for U.S. motor gasoline prices from April through September by 17 cents. The higher forecast prices are largely driven by higher crude oil costs-the result of falling oil inventories relative to average inventory levels of recent years and higher oil demand spurred by economic growth. EIA forecasts motor gasoline consumption to average nearly 9.3 million barrels per day during 2018, which tracks with consumption levels from last year despite higher prices.

Forecast crude oil production and prices go up mp3
Date: May 8, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration says that U.S. crude oil production increased from March to April 2018 by 120,000 barrels per day. The increase brought average crude oil production to 10.5 million barrels per day in April. EIA's latest forecast expects average production levels to remain above 10 million barrels per day for all of 2018. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is forecasting U.S. crude oil production to average 10.7 million barrels per day in 2018. The forecast also expects an increase from that mark in 2019, when production is expected to top 12 million barrels per day by the end of the year. This month's outlook also revised expected average Brent crude oil spot prices higher. The forecast now expects Brent crude oil to stay above $70 per barrel for the rest of 2018. Recent inventory draws and growing demand have offset production increases to push prices up in the near term.

Retail motor gasoline prices increase mp3
Date: April 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting that the price of regular-grade gasoline will average $2.74 per gallon during the summer driving season of 2018, which runs from April through September. In its April Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA is forecasting U.S. motor gasoline prices from April through June to average close to $2.80 per gallon, before the average decreases to $2.65 per gallon in September. Assuming the forecast holds for average retail gasoline prices throughout all of 2018, the average U.S. household will spend an additional $190 on motor fuel-related expenses in 2018, about 9% higher when compared to last year. EIA forecasts motor gasoline consumption to average nearly 9.6 million barrels per day during the summer of 2018, which is up from last summer's record level by a margin of about 20,000 barrels per day.

A warmer summer could mean higher electric bills mp3
Date: April 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects the average U.S. residential electricity bill to be 3.4% higher for the summer period of June through August, compared with last summer. The higher expected bills are a result of forecasts for slightly warmer temperatures and higher retail prices. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects the typical U.S. residential electricity bill to average $142 per month during the summer of 2018. However, electricity bills vary by a region's dependence on air conditioning and its prices. This summer, prices are expected to be higher in all U.S. Census regions. Price increases will range from 1.6% in the West South Central region to 3.8% in New England.

Crude oil and natural gas on pace for record years mp3
Date: April 10, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting that both crude oil and natural gas production will set new U.S. records in 2018. In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to reach 10.7 million barrels per day in 2018, which tops the 1970 record of 9.6 million barrels per day. U.S. dry natural gas production is also set to increase by record margins. For 2018, the outlook is forecasting dry natural gas production to reach a record 81.1 billion cubic feet per day, which follows a record increase in production from 2017 levels of 7.5 billion cubic feet per day. EIA expects new records in 2019 as well. EIA's forecast for crude oil production is an average of 11.4 million barrels per day, and natural gas production is set to increase by another 1.7 billion cubic feet per day.

Average natural gas production expected to increase 11% in 2018 mp3
Date: March 6, 2018
Description: In its new Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects natural gas production to increase by more than 11% from 2017 to 2018, approaching 82 billion cubic feet per day. Increased production is coming on the heels of record inventory withdrawals in early 2018. By the end of March, inventory levels are expected to drop to 1,481 billion cubic feet, the lowest levels since 2015. By the end of October, which generally marks the end of injection season, EIA expects inventories to slightly exceed the October 2017 level.

U.S. consumption of liquid fuels on the rise mp3
Date: March 6, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts U.S. liquid fuels consumption to grow by almost half a million barrels per day in 2018. That forecasted 2.4% increase would be the highest rate of growth in consumption since 2013. EIA projects that 70% of the increase will come from natural gas-sourced hydrocarbon gas liquids such as propane, butane, and ethane. Ethane consumption alone is expected to account for almost 65% of the growth in hydrocarbon gas liquids consumption, as new domestic ethylene crackers and export infrastructure have begun operations recently.

January's U.S. crude oil production tops 1970 record mp3
Date: February 6, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that U.S. crude oil production reached a record 10.1 million barrels per day in January. In its February short-term outlook, EIA increased its forecast for U.S. crude oil production in 2018 and 2019. Natural gas production forecast for record increase mp3
Date: February 6, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting U.S. natural gas production to see a record increase from 2017 to 2018 of roughly 10%. In its new short-term outlook, EIA expects to see natural gas production top 80 billion cubic feet per day in 2018, also a record, following 2017's level just shy of 74 billion cubic feet per day. Growth is expected to slow in 2019, but still increase at a 3% clip from 2018. EIA is forecasting decreases in natural gas prices from January levels, which rose in response to extreme cold weather and strong inventory draws. Henry Hub natural gas spot prices averaged $3.88 per million British thermal units last month. February's short-term outlook expects spot prices to average $3.20 per million Btu in 2018.

Generation from renewables will continue to trend up mp3
Date: February 6, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting that U.S. wind generation will provide 6% of U.S. electricity generation in 2018, about the same as in 2017, and 7% in 2019. Solar is set to contribute 1-2% of electricity generation over the next two years. In its new short-term outlook, EIA is forecasting that the nonhydropower renewables' share of utility-scale generation will increase from 10% in 2017 to nearly 11% in 2019. Hydropower's share will hover near 7% for both years. EIA currently expects wind generation to exceed hydropower in 2019, as increasing wind capacity comes online over the next two years.

U.S. crude oil production poised for record-setting 2018 mp3
Date: January 9, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting that the United States and Canada will be leading contributors to global oil supply growth in 2018 and 2019. In its latest short-term forecast, EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to average 10.3 million barrels per day in 2018 and 10.8 million barrels per day in 2019, both of which would top the 1970 record of 9.6 million barrels per day. The growth in U.S. production is largely centered in tight rock formations in Texas and New Mexico's Permian Basin. Additionally, EIA expects Canada to increase its oil production by 0.3 million barrels per day in 2018 and by 0.2 million barrels per day in 2019. Much of Canada's growth is expected to come from oil sands projects in northern Alberta.

LNG exports expected to increase significantly mp3
Date: January 9, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, to increase, climbing from 1.9 billion cubic feet per day in 2017 to 3.0 billion cubic feet per day in 2018. In its new short-term outlook, EIA attributes the increase to new export infrastructure capacity. Projects coming online in 2018 include the Cove Point terminal in Maryland, the Elba Island facility in Georgia, and the first liquefaction train at Freeport LNG in Texas. Additional export infrastructure is expected to come online in 2019. EIA forecasts that LNG exports in the second half of 2019 will average 5.5 billion cubic feet per day.

Wind forecast to surpass hydroelectric generation in 2019 mp3
Date: January 9, 2018
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting that U.S. wind power generation will increase from 705,000 megawatthours per day in 2018 to 769,000 megawatthours per day in 2019. By comparison, conventional hydropower is forecast to total 720,000 megawatthours per day in 2018 and 738,000 megawatthours per day in 2019. In its new short-term outlook, EIA is forecasting that wind's share of total U.S. electricity generation will reach 6.9% in 2019 and surpass hydropower's expected share of 6.6%. If the forecast holds true, it would mark the first time another renewable source overtook hydropower's share of total U.S. electricity generation on an annual basis. EIA currently forecasts wind generation capacity to increase from 88 gigawatts at the end of 2017 to 104 gigawatts by 2019.

Pipeline constraints, refinery maintenance push Western Canadian crude oil prices lower

daily Brent and WCS crude oil prices
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, based on Bloomberg L.P.

Planned maintenance at several large refineries in the Midwest has decreased the volume of crude oil processed in the region, which has resulted in lower prices of Western Canadian Select (WCS), a crude oil typically processed in the Midwest. WCS crude oil is typically priced lower than other crude oils because of differences in crude oil quality, but increasing production of WCS and pipeline capacity constraints in Western Canada have resulted in even lower prices of WCS compared with crude oil benchmarks such as Brent.
