War Related Illness and Injury Study Center
Clinical Services
The War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) offers several clinical programs for Veterans who have post-deployment health concerns and their providers. Referrals to the WRIISC program may be made by the Veteran’s VA Primary Care Provider (PCP), Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), post-deployment health champion, or Environmental health provider. The referring provider reviews and assists the Veteran in implementing the WRIISC E-Consult recommendations. (Every referral receives an E-Consult which helps to determine the next steps in a Veteran’s care plan.)
For referring providers: Referrals are done using the Inter Facility Consult (IFC) process in VA’s CPRS.
Clinical Services include:
- E-Consults
- Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Evaluations
- Enhanced Evaluation for Airborne Hazards Concerns
- Exposure Assessments
- Integrative Health and Wellness Services
E-Consults consist of a thorough Medical record review addressing both Provider questions and Veteran top concerns. Our team supports the referring healthcare team by providing an integrated E-Consult response report that summarizes the Veteran’s medical concerns, diagnostic tests and treatment to date, detailed recommendations for further assessment, and resources for additional information. The E-Consult also includes suggestions on next management steps for the Provider and Veteran to follow. Our findings, assessment, and recommendations are written in a response attached to the Inter-facility WRIISC consult in CPRS. The recommendations to a provider may include further clinical services offered by the WRIISC.
The Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Evaluation is designed for post-deployment Veterans with:
- Complex health conditions with no known cause
- A medical history that includes many tests and treatments with appropriate follow-up and little to no symptom improvement, and/or
- Possible deployment-related environmental exposures that may be contributing to medical concerns.
The WRIISC can help Veterans with the most complex, difficult-to-diagnose or medically unexplained health concerns related to airborne hazards in an Enhanced Evaluation for Airborne Hazards Concerns or read our Airborne Hazards brochure for providers.
The Exposure Assessment program is for Veterans from all combat eras with post deployment environmental exposure concerns. Exposure assessments are available over the telephone for eligible Veterans who are unable to travel to one of the WRIISC program locations. A referral from a VA primary care provider is also needed for this service. More information -->
