Washington, D.C. – Rep. Warren Davidson (OH-08) recently spoke on the house floor in support of H.R. 1900 which would designate the new Veterans Memorial and Museum, currently under construction in downtown Columbus, as the “National Veterans Memorial and Museum." H.R. 1900 recently passed the house and a companion bill has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (R-OH).
Veterans
Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect America. As a former Army Ranger, I believe our country has a solemn obligation to our veterans. Unfortunately, right now we are failing them.
The current state of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is an insult to our veterans. While many do receive care in an honorable fashion. Others are neglected or receive subpar care. The congressional response to the scandals in VA care has been more money. This has only treated the symptoms, not the cause of the problems.
My first bill, the Lead by Example Act, would put members of Congress and their staff on VA provided healthcare. This will spurn the solution to the VA crisis - prolonged and intense Congressional scrutiny. When healthcare for our veterans is good enough for members of Congress, we know we have made right on our commitment as a nation to care for our veterans.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH), today voted for the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act (S. 1094). The bill will codify the Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection within the Department of Veterans Affairs (established by President Trump by Executive Order) and grant the Secretary of Veterans Affairs additional authority to remove employees (including Senior Executive Service employees) due to poor performance or misconduct. The Congressman released the following statement after voting for passage:
“When I ran for Congress, I promised to help fix the VA. I am proud to do that today by voting for the long-overdue VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act. Congress cannot stop here. We need to build on this victory so that veterans can finally receive the care they have earned.”

Today, the House of Representatives passed the WINGMAN Act (H.R. 5166). The bill will allow Congressional employees to access the Department of Veterans Affairs claims records system in an effort to help provide benefits. Each Congressional office employs several individuals as caseworkers to assist and advocate on behalf of constituents in dealing with federal agencies.

We all have heard elected officials make these statements. At this point, they have become platitudes. If a poll were conducted, 100 percent of Congress would agree with them. But despite the rhetorical consensus on providing care for our veterans, VA care has not improved adequately. Over the years, seven different programs have been created that allow veterans to seek care outside of VA hospitals, but veterans are still dying as they wait for care, getting shuffled around and lost in the bureaucracy.

After news of the VA scandal broke, Congressional action both increased funding and created additional programs to address the systematic problems in care. Despite both these actions, problems persist.
