WASHINGTON DC -- U.S. Rep Al Lawson released the following statement regarding Hurricane Matthew:

"Hurricane Michael is heading towards the Florida Panhandle and is predicted to make landfall as a major Category 3 storm as early as Tuesday night. Parts of Florida's Fifth Congressional District is expected to get a major hit."

WASHINGTON DC- U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) worked to secure a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) grant for $3,415,000 for the Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (CCME). The CCME is led by Florida A&M University (FAMU) in partnership with Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU), California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), Jackson State University (JSU), Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), and the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

WASHINGTON DC – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson has helped secure a $40,000 USDA grant  to support rural development in Havana, Fla. The funds will help the Coastal Forest Resources Company install energy-efficient LED lighting in its plant. 
 
“This program will allow for cost savings and economic growth while encouraging environmentally-friendly energy policies,” Rep. Lawson said. “I strongly believe that sustainable development is key to economic growth.”

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. — Today, U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) hosted his Farmers Roundtable to address issues affecting the nation’s agricultural industry and rural communities.

During the two-hour dialog, held at the Tallahassee Community College Center for Workforce Development, Rep. Lawson discussed federal crop insurance, nutritional programs and trade enforcement laws administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also sought input from the more than 100 attendees, which included area farmers and agriculture industry representatives.

WASHINGTON DC — This week, U.S. Rep Al Lawson (FL-05) hosted the Congressional Black Caucus Briefing: Studying the Impact of Food Insecurity on Communities of Color. The food insecurity rate among African-American households is more than double that of Caucasian households. Latinos are more than twice as likely to be food insecure and twice as likely to live in poverty as white, non-Hispanics.

The House Agriculture Committee Feb. 1 met to formally organize and adopt the committee’s rules for the 115th Congress.

 

“I am very excited to get to work crafting policies that will benefit America’s farmers and ranchers with the help of my esteemed colleagues this Congress,” Committee Chairman Mike Conaway, R-TX, said. “They each bring a different perspective to the table, which will be instrumental as we dive into writing the next farm bill.
