U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) welcomed more than 50 students and their parents to the 2018 Military Academy Day in Tallahassee on Saturday, September 22.

The event was open to middle and high school students interested in learning more about the nation’s service academies, which include U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. There were also representatives from Florida A&M University’s ROTC programs in attendance who discussed local options with the students.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) will host a Military Academy Day on Friday, September 21 from 5:30 p.m.- 8 p.m. in Jacksonville. Recruiters and current cadets from the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marines Academy, as well as the Marion Military Institute, will be in attendance to discuss the application and admissions process. Rep. Lawson’s staff will also be on hand to answer questions about the nomination process.

A clinic for veterans in Tallahassee is now named after a World War II veteran from Jefferson County.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Health Care Center in Tallahassee was renamed in honor of Marine Corps Sergeant Ernest "Boots" Thomas.

"Boots" joined the Marines six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He grew up in Jefferson County.

A Monticello native decided to document his life through a book she wrote, "Call Me No Hero."

R.A. Sheats worked with Boots' best friend to put it together.

This week, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5649, the Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer William "Bill" Mulder (Ret.) Transition Improvement Act, which makes many improvements to the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) that helps members of the Armed Forces transition back to civilian life. Included in this package is Rep. Al Lawson’s Veterans Armed for Success Act, which was introduced in October along with fellow Florida Congressman John Rutherford (FL-04).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) has introduced H.R. 6285, the VETS Act, to authorize the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish a veteran’s hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. The legislation would provide vital care and resources to the North Florida veteran community.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCTV) -- Late Thursday, the United States Congress approved legislation to rename the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Center in Tallahassee in honor of Marine Corps Sgt. Enrest "Boots" Thomas.

The center is located at 2181 Orange Avenue.

The legislation was introduced by Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Representative Al Lawson (D-FL) and was approved unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill now heads to the president's desk to be signed into law. It gained Senate approval in February.

The legislation – introduced by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Rep. Al Lawson (D-FL) – was approved unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday. The bill, which the Senate approved back in February, now heads to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Christian Cochran will serve as the Wounded Warrior fellow for Rep. Al Lawson’s district office in Jacksonville. Cochran, who served in the United States Army Reserve, will assist with casework and provide support for the district’s veterans, active service members and their families.

“As a veteran, Christian has first-hand knowledge of the needs of our servicemen and women,” Rep. Lawson said. “His extensive military experience will prove to be a strong asset to our staff. I look forward to working with him during this fellowship.”
