Every spring, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives host a nationwide high school art competition. The Congressional Art Competition was established to display local high school students’ artwork in the U.S. Capitol.

High school students in California’s 34th District are invited to submit their artwork to be considered for the Congressional Art Competition. The winning artwork will be displayed for one year in an exhibit inside the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol. It will also be featured on the Congressional Art Competition website.

In Los Angeles, submissions from local student artists will be exhibited at the Los Angeles Art Competition Open House. During the Open House, Congressman Jimmy Gomez will speak to constituents about the Congressional Art Competition and unveil the district winner. Field deputies will be available to discuss internships, scholarships, and other services available to students that live in the District.

Artwork and paperwork must be submitted by April 17, 2018 to the District Office at 350 South Bixel Street, Suite 120, Los Angeles, CA 90017. Submissions must be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep (including the frame), must weigh no more than 15 pounds, and must be two-dimensional. Accepted mediums are any of the following:

  • Paintings: can be oil, acrylics, or watercolor
  • Drawings: can use colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, or charcoal
  • Prints: can be lithographs, silk screen, or block prints
  • Mixed media: can use more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, or watercolor
  • Collages: must be two dimensional
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photographs

Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution. It may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted. Work entered must be in the original medium, not a scanned reproduction of a painting or drawing.
