Thom’s Committee Assignments
As a member of the United States Senate, it is an honor and privilege to serve on five of the Senate’s 20 committees. My committee assignments reflect the constituents of North Carolina and I work each day to ensure I’m implementing policies that will grow our economy and protect Americans.

The Committee on Armed Services has jurisdiction over the nation's military, including the Department of Defense, military research and development, nuclear energy (as pertaining to national security), benefits for members of the military, the Selective Service System and other matters related to national security and defense policy.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs has jurisdiction include, but are not limited to: banking, insurance, financial markets, securities, housing, urban development and mass transit, international trade and finance, and economic policy.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over matters relating to federal criminal law, as well as human rights, immigration law, intellectual property rights, antitrust law, and Internet privacy. The committee is also responsible for all hearings prior to the Senate votes on confirmation of federal judges nominated by the president.

The Committee on Veterans Affairs has jurisdiction over all veterans and family benefits, compensation and matters relating to the vocational rehabilitation, education, medical care, civil relief, and civilian readjustment of our nation’s Veterans.

As a special committee, the Committee on Aging studies issues related to older Americans, conducting oversight of the Medicare program, Social Security and the Older Americans Act, but has no legislative authority.
