Great news! The Senate passed my legislation to name the Howell Post Office after Sergeant Donald Burgett. Mr. Burgett was an Army paratrooper and participated in the opening operations of the Normandy Invasion with A Company, 506th Parachute Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division.
We owe our freedoms to the sacrifices of individuals like Sergeant Donald Burgett, and this Post Office will serve as a lasting tribute and honor the memory of this incredible Michigander.
I'm proud that bipartisan legislation I authored to honor the crew members of the USS Indianapolis with Congress' highest honor, the Congressional Gold Medal, is almost across the finish line. This is a small token of appreciation we can and should bestow upon our veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms.
The crew members took on an intense and incredibly risky mission that was critical to ending the WWII. During the mission, the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine in what is known as the worst naval disaster in history. The crew members floated helplessly in shark-infested waters for days before finally being rescued -- only 316 of 1195 survived. Their sacrifice, perseverance, and bravery should never be forgotten.
