BROWN, Obadiah Bruen; a House Chaplain; born in Newark, Essex County, N.J., July 20, 1779; studied theology in Scotch Plains, N.J.; ordained in the Baptist Church, N.J., 1807; teacher; banker; editor; moderator, Baltimore, Md., Baptist association, 1807; pastor, First Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., 1807–1850; elected Chaplain of the United States Senate, 1809–1810; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Tenth and for the Thirteenth Congresses (October 30, 1807–March 3, 1809; September 23,1814–March 3, 1815);delegate, Baptist general convention, Philadelphia, Pa., 1820; co-founder, Columbian College (now George Washington University), Washington, D.C.,1822; member, board of trustees of the Columbian College (now George Washington University), 1822–1852; president, American Baptist Publication Society, 1825; chief clerk under Postmaster General of the United States, 1829–1837;died on May 2, 1852, in Washington, D.C.; interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
